Full Wave Bridge Envelope Follower

The Wikipedia article on voltage doublers says that a Greinacher circuit works by “following a Villard cell stage with what is in essence a peak detector or envelope detector stage”.

What if you put the peak detector or envelope detector stage after a full wave bridge rectifier? What wave form would result?

Rectifier diodes are 1N5407, the envelope detector diode is an FR207. The capacitor is 0.022 μF I used an Eplzon doorbell transformer for the AC power source.

My breadboard looked like the above. Unintuitively, the red wire attaches to the negative DC part of the bridge, while a hard-to-see blue-grey jumper attaches the positive DC part of the bridge to the envelope detector diode.

Orange wires are AC in, top grey wire is DC positive, the bottom grey wire is DC negative.

The waveform coming off the peak detector:

The peak detector or envelope detector stage reduces the ripple from about 39V to a little over 8V. The shape of the envelope isn’t all that interesting.

I think any smoothing of the huge ripple of a full wave bridge rectifier is due entirely to the capacitor.

This is a failed experiment.
